St. Joseph Church has a rich history as the first Catholic Church in Shawnee and the second in Johnson County, Kansas by a matter of weeks. At least five generations of Catholics have worshipped here. The photos and timeline below highlight some of the key places and times in our parish life.
1868: St. Joseph Church was built on this site. It was the second Catholic Church in Johnson County, KS.
1873: St. Joseph School was built.
1894: Fire destroyed the original Church building. Afterward, services were held in the school.
1906: A new Church building was completed.
1918: The parish rectory was built on the parish block.
1926: A new Church was constructed.
1930: A new rectory was completed (the current rectory building).
1934: St. Joseph High School was established.
1952: A new St. Joseph High School building was completed on campus.
1958: A new grade school was completed. (It is now the Parish Center.)
1967: Plans were approved for a new Church building, which is our current Church. The Knights of Columbus Hall was built this year.
1980: St. Joseph High School became Aquinas High School, on the St. Joseph campus 1980-1988.
2003: A new K-8 Education Center was built on campus.
2005: A new, free-standing Adoration Chapel was built between the Church and Parish Center
